School spotlights: Hayah, Saxony, GEMS, and what they do differently

Picking a school by curriculum is necessary, not sufficient. The differences between top-tier schools come down to culture and specialisation. Three worth knowing.

Hayah International Academy (Cairo)

The point of view: bilingual proficiency is not optional. Hayah sets a higher bar for Arabic than most American-curriculum schools in Egypt, and the students come out with genuine fluency in both languages. If Arabic-English bilingualism is a non-negotiable for your family, this is a short list of one.

Saxony International School (Cairo)

The point of view: German-English-Arabic trilingualism is worth the investment. The smaller community is a feature, not a bug; it creates deep ties that follow kids well past graduation. Narrow demographic fit — but an extremely strong one when it fits.

GEMS network (Dubai, Cairo, multiple)

The point of view: consistent global standards at scale. You can transfer between GEMS schools in different cities without losing a beat — which matters for families whose work moves them. Well-resourced; generally mid-to-high fees; cultures vary by individual campus, so visit.

The pattern

A good school at scale either has strong point of view (Hayah's bilingualism, Saxony's trilingualism) or strong process (GEMS's consistency). Avoid schools that have neither. Brochures, unfortunately, never tell you which is which — visits do.
