Kids today grow up swiping. TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts, you name it. The average clip runs under 60 seconds with some reaching even 15. Teachers complain that students can't focus anymore, but blaming the phone misses the point entirely.
The human brain has a plastic structure, which adapts to what it's fed, plastic in fact means “capable of being molded or modeled, of adapting to varying conditions”.
And when a child spends hours watching rapid-fire content, their brain gets molded into being good at processing fast information. That's in fact not damage, but slowly adapting and learning. The question is whether education can keep up, because right now, most of it can't, and it’s a worldwide issue.
Traditional classrooms weren't built for this, a 45-minute lecture made sense when the biggest distraction was a window or a note shot across the aisle. Now kids carry the most stimulating device ever invented in their pocket, some even 24/7. Asking them to ignore it doesn't work, and pretending otherwise just makes teachers frustrated and kids disengaged.
So what does work?
Short bursts. Real feedback. Clear rewards. These sound just like features of video games and social apps, but are what modern neuroscience says actually drives learning. The brain (which, remember, is plastic) pays attention when it expects something to happen next. So, give a child a problem, let them solve it, reward them fast, and they'll come back for more. That loop is powerful, and schools just haven't figured out how to leverage it yet.
The mistake is putting short attention and shallow minds on the same plan, as if there was some kind of correlation between the two. A kid who can't sit through a 40-minute lecture can spend three hours building a whole living and functioning world in Minecraft. The isse is in the delivery and not in the content, because there's a real difference between a child who won't focus and a child who won't focus on something that feels pointless to them. We need to be able to tell them apart.
EdTech that works doesn't fight the scroll, but borrows from it: lessons stay short, topics shift before boredom kicks in, progress feels visible and immediate, not saved for the end of the semester. That last “tiny” part matters more than most people think, because when kids (and not just kids) can see themselves getting better, even in small ways, they want to keep going. It's just good design applied to the right problem.
I know what some of you might be thinking but hold your horses, this isn't about dumbing things down either. A complex subject like fractions or photosynthesis can absolutely be taught in a short, punchy format, it just needs to be broken into pieces the brain can actually hold onto. Of course, when dealing with learning, five focused minutes beats one unfocused hour, every single time. The goal isn't to make things easier, but to make them stick, and those are again two very different things.
There's also something worth saying about one of the most underrated skills the human kind is equipped with: curiosity. Kids in this generation ask a lot of questions. Fast content didn't kill that… On the contrary, it actually fed it. A 30-second video about black holes can send a curious kid down a two-hour rabbit hole without anyone telling them to. Again, we see we are not talking about a short attention span, we are talking and witnessing the interest chasing a spark. Education should be doing exactly the same thing: lighting sparks, spotting them in the exact moment they light up, and then being able to get out of the way and let kids run with it.
The short-video raised the bar, improved the tools to learn and the capabilities of our kids to exploit them. If a lesson can't earn a child's attention in the first two minutes, that's a feedback about the lesson, not the kid, and it’s worth taking seriously. Education that meets kids where they are will always beat education that asks kids to meet it somewhere they're not. The tools exist. The research backs it up. The only thing left is actually using them — and using them well.
